Underground Church Author in the Sacramento Area

February 21, 2013

Dr. Robin Meyers, author of The Underground Church: Reclaiming the Subversive Way of Jesus will be in the Sacramento area from Friday, March 15, to Sunday, March 17.

Dr. Meyers (www.robinmeyers.com) is a nationally known writer and commentator, a prominent UCC minister, a peace activist, and a tenured professor. He advocates recapturing the spirit of the early church with its emphasis on what Christians do rather than on what they believe. He holds that following Jesus was—and must be again—subversive, in the best sense of the word, "a community that declares its loyalty only to love incarnate, not to Caesar." The church should be defined, now as then, by unqualified inclusion, extravagant generosity, radical dedication to peace and justice, and countercultural compassion for all people and creation.

On Friday, March, 15, he will lecture and discuss the topic, "From Galilean Sage to Supernatural Savior: Or, How I Became a Heretic with Help from Jesus," from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Elk Grove UMC, 8930 Elk Grove Blvd, Elk Grove, CA.

On Saturday, March 16, he will lead a workshop, "Building the Underground Church: Confronting Greed and Violence with Mobilized Love," from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Rancho Cordova UMC, 2101 Zinfandel Drive, Rancho Cordova, CA. A $50 donation is suggested with lunch provided.

From 7 to 9 p.m., he will lecture and discuss, "Answering the Critics of Religious Thinking: From the Ridiculous to the Sublime," at Temple B'nai Israel, 3600 Riverside Blvd., Sacramento.

On Sunday, March 17, he will deliver the sermon at 8:30 a.m. at Elk Grove UMC, 8930 Elk Grove Blvd., Elk Grove, and the sermon at 10:30 a.m. at the Elk Grove Congregational UCC Church, 9624 Melrose, Elk Grove, CA.
