California-Nevada Staff to Work Part-time with GBOD
Kelly Newell, California-Nevada Annual Conference director of camping and young people's ministries, assumed a part-time role with the denomination's General Board of Discipleship (GBOD) on January 1. In addition to her California-Nevada Conference duties, she has assumed the role of young people's ministry staff for the Western Jurisdiction. In the GBOD role, Newell will help to develop relationships in the Western jurisdiction, conferences, districts, and local churches to leverage the connectional system for more effective ministries with youth and young adults.
"I look forward to this opportunity to strengthen our conference's connection in the denomination around young people's ministry," said Newell. "It is a chance to truly be plugged in to what's working, what's new, what's exciting in creating Disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world with our young people," she said. "I look forward to my work with GBOD strengthening my work for the California-Nevada Annual Conference and for our jurisdiction and conference's presence through my work with GBOD to emulate who we are as a connectional church."
The GBOD position is part of the agency's plan to have a staff person in each jurisdiction to serve the breadth of the denomination. The position will divide direct resourcing for leadership development in young people's ministries throughout the jurisdiction in conjunction with ongoing and collaborative work in the jurisdiction.
Bishop Warner H. Brown, Jr. applauds GBOD's effort to strengthen agency ties with each jurisdiction and annual conferences across the connection. "In addition to the vital role that Kelly plays in our annual conference, she will now help our denomination as it seeks to reach the diverse population of young people in the west," said Bishop Brown. "Kelly will be an excellent addition to the young people's ministry staff as its works to help congregations reach out and engage young disciples."
Newell is a graduate of California State University with a Master's in Education with a bilingual/multicultural emphasis.
