Building a Bridge of Love to Angola

Doing What Matters to God!

It will be an exciting time as we gather this summer in Sacramento for the task of holy conferencing during our 2013 Annual Conference Session. As God's people, called United Methodists of the California-Nevada Annual Conference, we will lay the groundwork and embark upon a special mission project, "Building a Bridge of Love to Angola: Doing What Matters to God," to help empower our brothers and sisters in Angola and aid in the reconstruction of the medical clinic in Bom Jesus.
The clinic, abandoned during the civil war when most people and church members fled to the city, is the focal point for the medical and health care ministry of the Methodist Church in Angola. It is the site where malaria nets were distributed last fall and is the only clinic suitable for quick restoration. The community is poor and desperately needs medical care. Once operational, the clinic facility will play a key role in empowering and supporting the Angolan Methodist churches' participation in the global campaign to eliminate malaria in their country.
Repairs to the clinic include, but are not limited to, roof and ceiling repairs, window and door security improvements, painting, and utility repairs. Medical clinic equipment and supplies will then be provided and the clinic placed into medical service.
For us, this special mission project will include our prayers, financial gifts, and our commitment to the Gospel of Jesus Christ which calls us to help save lives.
Every local church and United Methodist in the annual conference can be involved because this project includes fundraising, publicity of the project, literature about the special project, and collection of supplies for the effort. Speakers with specific knowledge and details about this ministry and project are available to come to local churches across the annual conference for a presentation and to answer questions. Contact Phil Bandy, interim director of the California-Nevada United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) program, to arrange a special speaker. A video will also be produced for sharing in the local church during worship and other gatherings.
Bishop Brown is challenging us to raise $50,000 by June to dedicate and bless the offering for the mission during 2013 Annual Conference Session. "Building a Bridge of Love to Angola: Doing What Matters to God" will take the place of the traditional offering at Annual Conference.
