Bishop Warner H. Brown, Jr. has announced a cabinet change, effective July 1, 2013. After six years, the Rev. Renae Extrum-Fernandez (upper right) will be completing her service on the Cabinet. Rev. Extrum-Fernandez is superintendent for the Bridges District.
Bishop Brown spoke highly of Extrum-Fernandez's tenure saying, "I am extremely grateful for Renae's creative and faithful leadership during these times of change in the California-Nevada Conference." Bishop Brown says that Extrum-Fernandez has led in the formation of the new Bridges District and has taken her passion for making Disciples of Jesus Christ into every aspect of her work. He added, "The whole Conference has benefitted greatly from her ministry on the Cabinet and we are excited as we look forward to what she will bring to the Conference in the next phase of her ministry."
Six years is generally the standard term of service for a district superintendent.
The Bishop has asked the Rev. Schuyler Rhodes (lower right), pastor of Temple United Methodist Church in San Francisco, to become the new district superintendent of the Bridges District on July 1.
"I am delighted to welcome Schuyler Rhodes to the Cabinet," said Bishop Brown. "His love of the local church and his unique gifts in ministry will serve the Conference well in this role, as we continue to work toward a goal of more ably carrying out our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world," added Bishop Brown. "We look forward to his leadership."
Rhodes has served Temple UMC for twelve and a half years. Before being appointed to Temple UMC, he served at churches in New York City, New Jersey, and in rural New York State. His other experiences include campus ministry, retreat director, teacher, and workshop leader. In addition, Rhodes served as the national director for Peace with Justice Week and has extensive public speaking experience, traveling throughout Europe, Latin America, Asia and the United States.
Rhodes, who is currently completing his Doctor of Ministry degree at Drew Theological School, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the State University of New York at Potsdam and a Master of Divinity with honors from Drew. He has also completed additional graduate studies at State University of New York at Albany and Maryknoll School of Theology.
Reflecting on his impending new appointment Pastor Rhodes commented, "I am humbled and honored by the Bishop's invitation to participate in the work of our Annual Conference as the Bridges Superintendent."
Rhodes and his spouse Lisa Quoresimo just celebrated their twentieth wedding anniversary. They are the parents of twins Emma Elizabeth and Aaron Schuyler, both age 18.
