Youth Honor Veterans with a Weekend of Service

Sierra Service Project (SSP) is offering three faith-rich service weekends in February at Oak Park United Methodist Church in Sacramento. Each weekend begins on Friday at 6 p.m. and ends Sunday at 3 p.m. and are open to both junior and senior high groups.
In November, twenty-four youth and adult counselors from four Northern California churches spent Veteran's Day weekend making a difference in their community with SSP – a small gift to those who gave so much so that we can enjoy and help others to enjoy the great life we have in this country. We cleaned and repaired a home for a woman who gives a lot to her community but needed a helping hand to brighten her life.
We also repaired and upgraded old and unused modular class rooms at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, so they are safe and up to code for use as a preschool that will serve the neighborhood children. The new preschool will give parents a safe place to have their children cared for and given a head start while they themselves go to school and seek employment.
SSP's spiritual theme for the weekend was Jesus' two great commandments – Love your God with all your heart, soul, and mind; and Love your neighbor as Jesus taught us to Love. The evening program helped us connect what we were doing that weekend to those commandments. Through singing, discussing, and sharing we all grew in faith and spirit.
This was the third SSP Weekend of Service in which our youth group from St. Michael's Episcopal Church participated. Each year, our group grows in numbers as we share the wonderful experience we had upon our return. Thank you to all of the Sierra Service Project teams that made this very special weekend possible.
