First UMC of Modesto Celebrates 150 Years of Proclaiming God's Love

April 26, 2012

First United Methodist Church of Modesto invites you to join the church in celebration of its 150 years of "Proclaiming God's Love in the Heart of Modesto," at one or all the events planned, April through September.

"As our congregation celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, we have an opportunity to reflect on our own heritage and recall those who have gone before us – who have shaped our approach to Christian discipleship," writes the Rev. Debra Brady, pastor. "We have the opportunity to tell our story, to teach our children about how we got here, and to reflect on the ways we continue to be shaped by our history and how we create a legacy for those who come after us."
Bishop Warner H. Brown, Jr. will preach at the "Anniversary Celebration and Homecoming" worship service on Sunday, September 30 at 10 a.m. The weekend also will include a historic walk through Modesto's historic buildings, choir and youth group reunions, and a music concert.
Other anniversary events include:
  • Sunday, April 29: The Rev. Dave Hansen, expert on Methodism, will preach on "John the Methodist."
  • Wednesday, May 2: A potluck supper will be followed by the Rev. Dave Hansen's presentation on Methodism.
  • Sunday, May 20: A John Wesley Society luncheon with John Wesley impersonator, the Rev. Don Baldwin.
  • Sunday, June 10: VBS Music Sunday celebrating the 80th anniversary in the current building.
