Free Course on United Methodist Giving, Course on Moodle

April 19, 2012

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS)—United Methodist Communications is offering a free online course, "Turning Connectional Living into Connectional Giving," May 2-June 3, to help you explore ways your organization can support the shared ministry of The United Methodist Church.

The course is a four-part journey through why United Methodists give, the connectional nature of the Church, the apportioned and designated funds of the Church, and how you can make a difference in the world.
You'll learn how to be a "missional storyteller" – describing the difference the Church makes in the world and how giving impacts that. You'll also understand how to "make the ask" in your congregation.
This course is interactive and you can move at your own pace. There will be discussion forums, quizzes, and other activities for a class that's engaging and hands-on.
Is Moodle just a funny word?
Quite the contrary! Moodle is free software you can download that can help you communicate in new and different ways.
"Moodle 100 – Basic Training" is a hands-on online course that will equip you with the skills you need to understand Moodle from the learner's perspective, become familiar with the interface, and prepare to build your own course. California-Nevada pastors Tom Butler and Sung-Ho Lee took the course, and subsequently developed studies that United Methodist Communications is hosting on line.*
In Moodle 100, May 2-June 13, you'll see just how much you can do with the Moodle learning-management system. Each session includes four weeks of instruction and an additional two weeks of practice course work.
What will I learn with Moodle 100? How to:
  • Develop an online Bible study
  • Facilitate real-time chats with your congregation
  • Conduct a poll among your congregation
  • Send surveys and questionnaires
  • Share resources and files
  • Create a discussion forum
Some churches even use Moodle to manage their websites!
Register through April 26 for the May 2-June 13 course. Cost: $89. Download syllabus (PDF format).
No participants will be admitted if the course becomes full. The next Moodle 100 course starts in July.
