Prepare to Travel the 'Road of Transition'

March 15, 2012

Are you prepared for your next appointment transition? Whether this year or another, United Methodist clergy, their families, and the congregations involved will be making transitions as they say "yes" to Christ and to the itinerant ministry of the United Methodist Church. Social psychological research documents many of the predictable dynamics of clergy transitions, and learning those dynamics can make a crucial difference in the way congregations perceive each successive pastor.

Therefore, preparing for the transition is a responsible and pastoral way to take seriously John Wesley's admonition to "do no harm" and to "do all the good you can."
The 2012 Clergy (and Spouses) Transition Workshop, sponsored by the California-Nevada Annual Conference Board of Ordained Ministry and Council on Clergy Development, is specifically designed to assist with that preparation, while providing many more resources.
It will take place May 23-25 (4 p.m. Wednesday through noon on Friday), at San Damiano Retreat Center in Danville, California.
Highlights will include "Strategic Shepherding – A Family Systems Approach," led by the Rev. Dr. Tom Smith, a California-licensed clinical psychologist and ordained PC(USA) clergy, who served churches for more than 25 years, and studied with the late Rabbi Edwin Friedman. He integrates family systems thinking, ministry, leadership, and counseling into his teaching.
Dr. Smith will be available for half-hour and hour-long sessions to discuss specific concerns.
Circuits are being asked to send at least one representative to the workshop, who can take back what he or she learns, for use by others in the circuit. The representative need not be a pastor in transition. The Ministerial Education Fund is underwriting expenses for onsite lodging, meals, and materials so that these circuit representatives may attend free of charge.
Onsite lodging is limited, so sign up early!
Register on line now, or by visiting Registration deadline is May 18.
Church Transition Orientation and Worship Is Scheduled
The 2012 Church Transition Orientation and Workshop has been scheduled for Saturday, June 2, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the United Methodist Center in West Sacramento.
This workshop was developed to assist congregations through the time of disorientation created by a change in pastoral appointment, so that both congregants and the new clergyperson and family may make the most of the time of transition.
Churches are urged to send members of their Pastor-Parish and Worship committees, Lay Leaders, and other leaders of the congregation – to learn best practices for beginning a new future together. Make the most of this uniquely United Methodist event, the inevitable saying "goodbye" and "hello!" to our pastors!
