Circuit Youth Rally Energizes Participants

February 09, 2012

Genesis United Methodist Church in San Jose hosted the quarterly youth rally for El Camino Real Circuit 8, this past Saturday (Feb. 4, 2012). Called "TRUTH," the rally was the second event of its kind – the first one having been hosted by Green Korean UMC in Milpitas, in November.

There were 100-plus youth in attendance, representing Genesis UMC, Green Korean UMC, St. Paul UMC and First UMC in Fremont, and Alum Rock UMC in San Jose.
"Pastors in the circuit came up with the idea to bring the youth together," says Genesis UMC Youth Coordinator Wesley Hingano. "It is like meeting family members for the first time. We all know we have a connection through our faith, and by seeing each other every three months, our youth are able to interact with each other as well as share what they are doing at their church."
Text for the event was 1 Timothy 1.
"Through an interactive sermon video, every student was challenged to jump into the ring and show TRUTH to someone who does not know Jesus Christ," Hingano says. The youth sat in small groups in the Sanctuary and watched a three-part video sermon. After each section, the groups were given a discussion question:
1. What is TRUTH to you?
2. To whom do you need to show TRUTH? (With whom do you need to share Jesus?)
3. "One name, one vow, one week"
Hingano says the final discussion involved a challenge for the youth to take a vow – that one week from that day, they would share Jesus with the person they decided upon during Discussion 2.
"We had boards set up around the room saying, '1 name 1 vow 1 week.' The students were to write a prayer for that person on the board during worship. Many students wrote a prayer for their friends, siblings, or cousins – but most requests were for their parents," Hingano says.
He adds, "We ask that we all keep in prayer these students' prayers, as they take on the challenge of sharing Jesus Christ with others."
The youth also took part in icebreaker games, personal quiet time, reading, the sharing of testimonies, a talent showcase, "exciting worship by the Genesis 4g's youth band (which stands for "at Genesis, Glory Goes to God") – and of course, a delicious meal!"
Hingano says all the youth had a great time, and "we can't wait to meet again!"
The next quarterly meeting, to take place within the next three (3) months, will be at Alum Rock UMC.
