GBOD Launches Five-Part Video Series, 'Dreaming of Vital Congregations'

February 09, 2012

You are invited to the table for conversation, to learn about and prayerfully consider areas of primary importance to the Church.

As United Methodists, all of us want to be a part of a church that is vital and vibrant. We dream of a church that touches our soul and sends us out into the world to "make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world."
In that spirit, the General Board of Discipleship (GBOD) has produced a five-part video series, Dreaming of Vital Congregations, which celebrates and explores the issues we all hold dear. The videos are intended to engage UM clergy and lay leaders and General Conference delegates in discussions about the denomination's four areas of focus. They can serve as discussion starters for General Conference delegations and local church small groups.
The first video, Church 2092: Transforming Our Congregations to Arrive There, seeks to stimulate discussion by asking the questions: What will The United Methodist Church look like in 80 years? Will it survive? If so, how will we transform our congregations to ensure that they will arrive at 2092?"
Watch 7 min. 40 sec. video above. This video and a companion Church 2092 Study Guide is available online now at
It will be followed, in the coming weeks, by these four films:
  • Creating New Memories: The Art of Planting New Churches (Available Feb. 15)
Remember your first memory of church? Some say those who live in the United States are losing their memory of church. If so, how do we plant new memories? Think strategically with us about planting new churches in the U.S.
  • Our Over-Messaged Lives: Finding Time for a Spiritual Life (Available March 1)
Do you sometimes feel as though you live an over-messaged life? Texting, emailing, web-surfing, television – how do we find the space and time for God? What is available at our fingertips to make sure that time for God happens in our lives?
  • Making Growth Sustainable: Providing Needed Resources in Central Conferences (Available April 1)
What do you take for granted when you walk into your church each Sunday? How is it that the fastest growing areas of The United Methodist Church are in areas with the least resources? Will that ever change?
  • A New Generation of Church Leaders: Training & Nurturing Young People (Available April 15)
Have you ever felt that you didn't fit in at church? If so, how will our young people grow to be strong leaders in a church that often excludes them? However, we believe things are changing!
Watch for each of these new videos to be available on line and announced in the Instant Connection. Or sign up here to be notified when each is released.
