Change the World Weekend: Wesley UMC in Bakersfield 'Paints the World' on May 15

May 18, 2011

By the Rev. Karen Stoffers-Pugh
Pastor, Wesley UMC, Bakersfield

Thirty-nine folks from Wesley UMC in Bakersfield began Sunday morning with worship on May 15. After a quick half-hour service, we traveled 1/2 mile east of the church to Horace Mann Elementary School. One of our church/choir members is a teacher at HM. Several members of the congregation either attended HM or their children attended HM. Along with the principal and her daughter, we touched up murals in the "reading patio" and painted a new mural on the utility box. We swept and cleaned the patio area, as well. In addition, we planted flowers around four trees in the playground area. Several folks also sat at a long table in a classroom and put together "autograph books" and performed other tasks for teachers.

One of the things I did to encourage others to join us was that I made "invitations" with the Change the World logo on one side, and the information about the event on the other side. I handed them out to everyone in the congregation on May 8. Two people from outside our church participated because they were invited by congregation members.
