What Are Mainline Denominations to Do? Find out at St. Mark's UMC

January 20, 2011

A Moon Lectures speaker at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Sacramento will tackle the issue of Mainline Emergence: Why It Matters So Much and How You Can Participate, on Friday, Feb. 11.

Brian McLaren, an author and innovative Christian thinker generally regarded as the "father" of the emergent church movement, will deliver the latest address in the Bob and Dorrie Moon Lectures series at 7:30 p.m. By request, however, he also has consented to present a daylong workshop on the topic from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 11.
At "A Day With Brian McLaren," he will address:
• What's at stake if we don't reverse Mainline decline,
• Why Mainline Protestantism is more important now than ever before, and
• The practicalities of getting from here to there
The Rev. Faith Whitmore, pastor at St. Mark's, says, "I asked Brian if he would spend some time with clergy (and laity) who simply and profoundly need encouragement these days. Sometimes our work/ministry seems so hard and we don't get a lot of support."
Cost for the workshop, lunch, and evening lecture is just $50.
Reservation deadline is Feb. 4. Make reservations on line at www.stmarksumc.com/mclarenday or contact the church office at 916.483.7848 or admin@stmarksumc.com.
