LAS VEGAS, Nevada | Relevance Ministries, the young adult ministry of The Desert Southwest Annual Conference, has announced the return of an exciting conference for young adults (ages 18-30) taking place in Las Vegas.
Scheduled for Feb. 18-20, Relevance X is focused on developing disciples within our faith communities and in the world, empowering them to become new disciples.
Tony Jones, a sought-after speaker in the areas of emerging church, postmodernism, and Christian Spirituality will keynote Relevance X 2011. The author of The New Christians: Dispatches from the Emergent Frontier, he is theologian-in-residence at Solomon's Porch in Minneapolis.
The book has been highly praised:
"There is indeed new life arising from the compost of Christendom. Tony's book lets us see it, smell it, and touch it. The challenge with a book like this is neither to be overcome by the smell of the poop, nor stupefied by the beauty of a flower – more than anything we must see this book as an invitation to get our hands dirty, break a sweat, get messy outside the air conditioned walls of comfort, and not just read more books on gardening."
– Shane Claiborne, author, activist and recovering sinner
"I devoured this book! Like A New Kind of Christian gave words to the experiences and thoughts of so many, early in this decade, The New Christians provides language, theology and a nudge toward a path out of our bipolar morass of left vs. right, liberal vs. conservative, mainline vs. evangelical. It cuts sideways across all the rhetoric, entrenchment and warfare-positioning of modern day Christianity. I'm confident Tony's book will provide definition for many, helpful disequilibration for others, and – best of all –new hope for those who cannot (or refuse to) continue trudging numbly along the cattle paths of the American church."
– Mark Oestreicher, president, Youth Specialties
Relevance X 2011 will serve to prepare this new generation of leaders and discuss sharing the good news. Many of us believe it's important, or have at least heard that it is – but why?
Why is it important that we attend church? Are we saving souls from hell? Are we improving this life by building God's kin(g)dom on earth? Are we just inviting folks to be a part of a welcoming, nurturing community?
How we answer these questions become the foundation of almost every other question we ask or answer on our journey of faith, and being clear about why we attend church offers us a better understanding of our own theology, our relationship with God, and what it is we have to offer the hurting world around us. This theme will be woven throughout the event, as Relevance X 2011 will allow attendees to converge, transform, and innovate.
"In 2010 we worked to prepare this new generation of Christian Leaders, that we firmly believe need to be the leaders of today," says Glen Simpson, chair of Relevance Ministries. "This conference 'encouraged young people to live out God's vision for themselves and others, with hope for a just and inclusive world.'"
One attendee shared that, "One of the things that the Lord has been speaking to me about is being more vocal about my faith. This conference is just what I needed. The Holy Spirit spoke to me the whole time and just made me aware of how we need to go out into this world and spread the Gospel."
Relevance X will not simply be an event you attend. Relevance X, a movement that focuses on empowering young adults to become leaders in their communities through worship, service, and mission and by developing their leadership skills, uniting their voices, and actively creating change in our communities.
