Positive News From San Bruno Disaster Area

September 30, 2010

California-Nevada Annual Conference Disaster Response Coordinator Norm Hardin has provided the bishop with an encouraging status report regarding the San Bruno disaster area.

"The Red Cross and Salvation Army claim that all of the displaced victims are housed and fed, and their safety and health needs are taken care of," Hardin says. "PG&E is starting to disburse funds to them. So far no unmet needs have surfaced which I am aware of."
However, he adds, "This is just the beginning. Financial assistance from our churches to UMCOR is always appreciated and well used. UMCOR has provided the Conference with a $10,000 grant for San Bruno response, and whether or not we get reimbursed by PG&E as we use it remains to be seen."
Hardin adds that as we focus on the disaster in San Bruno, it provides a good opportunity for each church to look at its own disaster preparedness, to determine its own level of disaster preparedness and whether it is "up to the task" of responding.
