Task Force Organized in Response to San Bruno Fire
September 16, 2010
By the Rev. Kristie Olah
Superintendent, El Camino Real District
In response to the devastating explosion and fire in San Bruno, United Methodist clergy and lay persons of our area are coming together to provide support for the community. At the request of Bishop Warner H. Brown, Jr., the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has given a grant of up to $10,000 to our Conference for this work.
There are many who have offered food, clothing, shelter, and other physical items to those who have lost their homes or been evacuated. But there is other help needed. People are speaking in news reports and in everyday conversations about their fears and grief. We hope to offer coordinated emotional and spiritual support not only to direct victims, but to the general community for weeks or months to come.
The Rev. Warren Dale, pastor of Woodside Road UMC in Redwood City, is coordinating a task force that will assess the needs, make connections with groups, churches, and agencies already at work, and plan our response. Rev. Dale has training and experience in community recovery after disasters and losses. The task force includes lay and clergy persons from churches up and down the Peninsula, including First Tongan UMC of San Bruno.
Financial donations for the project would be welcome. Checks may be sent to the California-Nevada Annual Conference, PO Box 980250, West Sacramento, CA 95798-0250. Please make checks payable to California-Nevada Annual Conference and write "San Bruno Fire" in the memo line. Though UMCOR has given us a donation, at this time they have not assigned an Advance Special number for this recovery work.
Let us continue to hold one another up as we reach out in hope and grace.
Editor's Note: Donations from churches will appear on their Apportionments Statement, for information purposes only. Individual contributions will be reflected on a church's Apportionments Statement if the name of the church is added to the memo line of the check: i.e. "San Bruno Fire/__UMC, (city)." (Please be sure to give the church's location since many church names are duplicated across the Conference.)
