First Tongan UMC Opens Its Doors to Those Left Homeless by Explosion

September 10, 2010

First Tongan United Methodist Church of San Bruno was undamaged by the catastrophic natural gas explosion and fire, early yesterday evening, which destroyed a San Bruno neighborhood and claimed at least four lives. The church is located across town about 2 ½ miles from the epicenter of the explosion.

"Everyone here is fine; we're just opening our church as a shelter and accepting donations," a church volunteer reported today.
She said one family from the congregation lost its home in the disaster and is staying at the church. But she emphasized that the shelter is open to all, on a 24-hour basis, not just to members.
The church also is accepting donations of emergency supplies for victims.
First Tongan UMC is located at 560 El Camino Real, San Bruno, CA 94066. Visit the church's webpage and use the Google Maps feature to plan your route there.
