Text Your Donation to Help 'Slam Dunk Malaria'

June 09, 2010

In the time it takes to make a free-throw, a child will have died of malaria.

It happens every 30 seconds.
That's why this year, as the Bishop's Reception event at Annual Conference Session, we're going to "Slam Dunk Malaria"!
Friday evening has been set aside as a fundraiser for Imagine No Malaria – "a ministry of the people of The United Methodist Church to eliminate death and suffering from malaria in Africa by the year 2015." Since NothingButNets is a big part of the Imagine No Malaria initiative, we're giving the event a basketball theme.
The event is being sponsored by the Episcopacy Committee, in partnership with the Youth Delegation to Annual Conference Session.
There will be several ways for you to participate and contribute.
While watching the event via our live broadcast, text the word "malaria" to 27722 and a $10 donation will be added to your cell phone bill – with 100 percent of that going to the Imagine No Malaria campaign. $10 is all that it costs to buy a mosquito net, to protect a sleeping child from this deadly disease.
To donate on site at the Convention Center:
·         Text the word "malaria" to 27722 – just like the folks at home – to make a $10 donation (automatically charged to your cell phone bill).
·         Stop by the Youth Delegation table and make a donation.
·         Buy a chance to shoot a basket for $1 per free-throw. Get tickets at the Youth table – or from Youth Delegation members, who'll be wearing them around their necks on the night of the event!
·         Participate in the District Challenge! Buy $1 tickets and have your Superintendent, Youth Delegation representative, or pastor shoot free throws. You'll earn one point for your district for every ticket sold, and for every free throw made, your district will earn a bonus point. The district with the most points at the end of the evening gets bragging rights and a "magnificent" trophy!
Bishop Brown will be there, of course – and there'll be meet and greet time, in addition to all the Slam Dunk Malaria activities.
Please join us in Sacramento on Friday evening, June 18 (beginning at 8:00) to help "Slam Dunk Malaria" – even if you won't be attending ACS otherwise. Or if you can't come, do set aside time to watch the action on your computer through our live broadcast and to text your donation.
It only takes about 30 seconds.
In the time it takes to make a free-throw, you can make a difference.
You can save a life.
