New Info Regarding Spanish Language Immersion Trips!

June 03, 2010

If you've been thinking about the Spanish Language Immersion trip to the Celas Maya Spanish School in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala this summer – but aren't quite sure it's for you – here are a few new developments to consider:

·         Clergy will be glad to know that the Spanish Language Immersion trip has been approved for .75 CEUs in the Intercultural Competency area.
·         A number of people had registered for the Language Immersion/UMVIM trip to Mexico.  Unfortunately, that trip has been cancelled. Students considering joining the Guatemala group may be interested to know that Celas Maya coordinates with a number of volunteer projects, so you can participate in them alongside your study.
·         Celas Maya is also offering another fun alternative – Spanish Language Immersion and ... Salsa! (Students can add an hour per day of Salsa lessons to their study schedule if they choose, for a small additional fee.)
·         If the three weeks currently scheduled (July 30-August 21) is too long for you, Celas Maya will happily take you for a shorter period (although a minimum of two weeks' stay is recommended). Registration is for blocks of one week at a time, so you could travel with the group from the start and return earlier, or join the group later and return home at the same time as the others. One way or another, you will have Cal-Nev friends while you are there!
Meanwhile, here are details about the trip once again:
The basic program involves three weeks of intensive study. Included in the tuition ($165 per week: yes, per week!) are a home stay with a local family, meals for six days each week, and one-on-one study with a private teacher for five hours per day – plus free coffee, Internet, and ping pong! The three-week course, lodging and meals, as well as round trip air fare, will cost approximately $1200. (This is slightly higher than first announced due to the cost of arrangements for transfer from the airport in Guatemala City to Quetzaltenango.) You would want to take extra funds for Sunday meals, amenities, side trips, etc.

The group will leave from the San Francisco Bay area on Friday, July 30 and return on Saturday, August 21.
