Five years ago Wesley Foundation at University of California, Berkeley decided to "rethink church" and developed a new model of campus ministry to engage students in the making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the church and the world. Wesley's new model includes a residential student housing community for 90 students who will live in an environment shaped by United Methodist values of diversity, inclusion, and radical hospitality.
This Saturday, April 17 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, during UC Berkeley's "open house" event called Cal Day: Open House, Open Mind, the new Wesley House & Campus Center will open its doors to prospective new residential students for the fall 2010-11 academic school year. Cal Day visitors are invited to tour Wesley House and receive free tee shirts promoting Wesley as a future Build-It-Green project.
The new Wesley House & Campus Center is a residential student housing and service center located on Bancroft Way across from Cal's Recreational Sports Facility. Wesley House features a ground floor campus ministry, eight state-of-the-art apartment suites, a penthouse study and deck with bay views, and an onsite laundry. Each fully-furnished apartment suite has five bedrooms, three full baths, a common room and complete kitchen. Students are financially obligated by the bed - so no need to find roommates to fill an apartment.
The University of California at Berkeley seeks to raise up national and international leaders. Wesley seeks to equip those leaders with the resources they need to pursue a passion for justice, to live lives of meaning and purpose, to discover spiritual gifts, and to be disciplined citizens with high moral values and a sense of personal integrity. For our Christian students, Wesley seeks to equip leaders to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. For our United Methodist students, Wesley seeks to raise up generations of innovative lay and clergy members.

Wesley has set aside an entire five-bedroom apartment suite for qualifying students who are particularly dedicated to Wesley's mission and goals. Qualifying students will pay substantially below market rates for their beds. Students interested in below-market-rate beds should contact Wesley's rental agent, EAH, Inc, at (510) 895-2333 or through email at wh-manager@eahhousing.org.

The "brand" of Christian discipleship called the United Methodist Church should be as familiar to students as Apple, Cal, Starbucks, and Levi Strauss. Young adults should think of the United Methodist Church as a vibrant living community - just like the new Wesley House and Campus Center will be this fall.

Wesley's new model of campus ministry is our opportunity as United Methodists to make an indelible mark on generations of innovative leaders.
