GCFA Board Recommends Special General Session

December 09, 2009

The board of the General Council on Finance and Administration for The United Methodist Church has passed two resolutions "addressing the financial hardships facing local churches and annual conferences," particularly "the difficulties they face in maintaining their connectional giving at the annual conference and general Church levels."

One of the resolutions calls for the Council of Bishops to authorize a special (interim) General Session to address two items: the recommendations from the Call to Action Task Force, and pension plans for clergy in the United States.
The board also directs GCFA to work with the General Board of Pension and Health Benefits "to obtain an independent actuarial review of the need for additional funding for the clergy pension plan" and to develop recommendations for easing the burden annual conferences face in funding it.
