Civil Rights Leader Dr. Joseph Lowery Preaches at Glide UMC

Civil Rights leader the Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Lowery followed Bishop Warner H. Brown, Jr. at Glide Memorial United Methodist Church on Sunday, preaching at the 11 a.m. service.

Dr. Lowery was one of the organizers of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which helped launch the American Civil Rights Movement after Rosa Parks' arrest in 1955. He was also a co-founder, with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and founded the Lowery Institute for Justice and Human Rights at Clark University in Atlanta, where he serves on the Board of Trustees (chaired by Bishop Woodie W. White). He is a retired elder in The United Methodist Church.
Dr. Lowery delivered the benediction at the inauguration of President Barack Obama on January 20th of this year, and in July was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
