United Methodist Chaplain Is Aboard the USS New York

November 06, 2009

NEW YORK (UMNS) - United Methodist chaplain Laura Bender was among the crew members aboard the future USS New York, which sailed into New York Harbor on November 2, stopping for a 21-gun salute opposite "Ground Zero," the World Trade Center site, before continuing on to her berth in midtown Manhattan. The ship's bow contains more than seven tons of steel recovered from the wreckage of the Trade Center. United Methodist News Service will report from the ship on Friday as the crew prepares for its November 7 commissioning into the U.S. Navy fleet.
