John Nilsen Entertains on the Ivories at Brentwood UMC, Sept. 20

September 03, 2009

Award-winning pianist John Nilsen will be in concert at Brentwood United Methodist Church in Brentwood, California on Sunday, September 20 at 4 p.m., performing both original compositions and his own arrangements of well-known hymns. With 16 CDs and nearly one million copies in sales to his credit, the Oregon-based pianist ranks as one of the most successful recording artists in the Northwest.

As for many artists, rich sources of inspiration for Nilsen are his family, outdoor activities, and travel (he maintains a performance schedule of more than 200 shows per year, including national tours of the United States, Great Britain, and Japan) - but it is the clarity with which he is able to translate those experiences into music that sets him apart. As a press release from his label, Magic Wing, puts it, "From the bustle of a French café to the torrent of a raging stream, Nilsen's music inspires us to look more carefully, to feel more deeply, and to celebrate this life of ours."
He also is known for creating a distinct level of intimacy with his audience.
"As a performer, I like exploring beyond the boundaries of my recorded songs," Nilsen says. "It gives me the chance to offer something special, spontaneous, and personal to my audience. The entire performance hinges on the connection not only between the players, but with the audience as well."
The September 20 concert is free, but an offering will be taken. Brentwood UMC is located at 809 2nd Street, Brentwood, CA 94513.
