"Peace Pop-Up a Hit in Mill Valley"

January 07, 2015

Taking the church outside the walls...that was the goal of the "Peace Pop-Up" of Mt. Tamalpais UMC in Mill Valley, when on a cold and clear Thursday evening before Christmas, the congregation gathered in the plaza of downtown Mill Valley to offer a place for rest, meditation, community and peace. A tent marked the location of a fire bowl, to light a candle for peace, a meditation space and a place to write prayers of peace and hope, and place them on a Christmas tree. Greeting shoppers and people heading to dinner allowed church members to interact with friends and neighbors. Caroling for an hour brought in more people, including many families with kids. One woman who just happened by said, with tears in her eyes, "This is where the church needs to be..at the center of the community. Thank you so much for being here." She came to worship on Christmas Eve! The local Chamber of Commerce is interested in the church offering "Peace Pop-Up" at other locations and times! Church members are already planning other pop-up events around southern Marin for the next year.
