Third Annual Blessing of the Clowns Held at Durham UMC
The Durham Community United Methodist Church conducted its Third Annual Blessing of the Clowns on Sunday, August 2. The first week of August is International Clown Week, by virtue of a 1970 declaration by then-President Richard M. Nixon (the declaration was passed into law by the 91st Congress).
Durham UMC's pastor, Rev. Dave Rieck (Pokey the Clown) has been clowning for 52 years and works hard to continue the craft. The church hosted a two-day Clown College on Friday and Saturday, and the graduates performed a skit for the children's sermon to illustrate the concept, "a happy heart is good medicine."
After the children's time the pastor blessed the clowns for a continued year of ministry to bring happiness, joy, and laughter wherever they go.
In keeping with the event, the church was decorated with balloons and other fun items - and after church a Carnival Food Potluck capped off all the fun.
