Bishop Brown to Join Philippines Solidarity Visit, Trip Moved to July

May 21, 2009

The Philippines Pastoral and Solidarity Visit scheduled for August 13-24 has been moved up to July 20-31 - and Bishop Warner H. Brown, Jr. will join the team for this year's visit.

The trip is organized by the California-Nevada Annual Conference Philippines Solidarity Task Force and hosted by the National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP).

In 2006, a resolution was passed at Annual Conference Session to respond to the reported extra-judicial killings taking place in the Philippines, along with other human rights abuses targeted against religious activists, educators, labor leaders, and students. As a result, families of victims have been visited in various regions of the Philippines, and an Advance Special offering has been established to help support the needs of surviving family members. In addition, task force members have been engaged in ongoing educational and advocacy efforts to stop the human rights abuses through a growing international ecumenical network.

Women and young adults are especially encouraged to join this year's team.

This will mark the third consecutive annual visit to the Philippines by a team organized by the Conference's Philippines Solidarity Task Force.
