Social Justice Agency Head Applauds Repeal of Healthcare Rule

April 17, 2009

WASHINGTON (UMNS) - Jim Winkler, chief executive of the General Board of Church and Society, the social justice agency of The United Methodist Church, is applauding President Barack Obama's decision to repeal an expansion of the law that allows healthcare providers to follow their conscience in deciding whether or not to provide services.

Expansion of the law would puts services at risk for health care. The President's decision repeals the Bush Administration's expansion of the 30-year-old "Provider Refusal Rule."

"The United Methodist Church believes health care is a basic human right," Winkler says. "Anything that could possibly keep persons from receiving health care negates that right."
