Go on an Adventure with Jesus, This Easter!

March 24, 2009

Are you up for an adventure?

The Monterey Bay Church Extension Society challenges churches in the California-Nevada Annual Conference to "leave their nets" and follow Jesus on an adventure that He will chart, this Easter season.

"Let's work together to make a difference right in our own back yard," writes Extension Society Chair, the Rev. Robin Mathews-Johnson (pastor of First United Methodist Church of Watsonville).

In a letter on behalf of the Society, Mathews-Johnson asks churches to donate all or part of their 2009 Easter offering to a mission project to fix the Soledad parsonage. While the house is structurally sound and pleasing in appearance, some serious problems, due in part to deferred maintenance, have been detected. An inspection team puts the cost of professional repairs and materials at $16,000. In addition, a number of volunteer labor hours will be necessary to complete the project.

The Society will oversee the project, with the work being coordinated by the Church of the Wayfarer in Carmel.

Mathews-Johnson recalls that in answer to Jesus' call, the disciples left their homes and businesses and "joined him in a new life .... committed to something bigger than themselves."

"We may or may not need to leave anything behind," she writes, "but we are all called out of an old way of life."

For project details, download reproducible color brochure here, in PDF format or as a PowerPoint presentation.

Churches may customize the flyer by printing directly from the Power Point to a two-sided (duplexing) printer.

In addition, Church of the Wayfarer is printing and folding 2,000 copies of the PDF version, and has offered to mail them to other churches for use as inserts in their Easter bulletins. If interested contact Jerry Gleason,
