New Mission Opportunity - Right Here at Home!

March 13, 2009

The historic Laton United Methodist Church needs a bit of a facelift - so the Fresno District Missionary and Church Extension Society is seeking United Methodist Volunteers in Mission teams to work alongside Laton residents to remove the existing exterior paint and paint the exterior walls, this spring and summer.

Teams will be welcome beginning in April - at weekends or mid-week - until the approximately 5,000 square foot project is completed. Scaffolding, lift equipment, and paint will be supplied, along with a couple of home-cooked Saturday evening meals!

The church is located at 6381 De Woody, Laton, California, in Fresno County.

A focal point for community events, the Laton church building provides space for community "Movie Night," a clothing exchange bank, and spill-over space for youth and children's activities organized by the Neighborhood Activity Center across the street. Fresno District leaders and local United Methodists of the Hanford UMC see the building as an essential mission outpost in the Laton community, even though a UMC congregation is not currently active there. They hope the current mission and outreach efforts may lead to development of a congregation in the predominantly Hispanic community. The presence of UMVIM teams will be a witness to United Methodists' desire to share God's Love by their service and actions!

Pastors and UMVIM team leaders interested in details about the project's tasks, tools volunteers should bring, or lists of local events, entertainment, housing, and food available locally should visit the Laton UMC page.
