Darfur Awareness: An Evening With Omer Ismail

January 29, 2009

"Genocide No More-Save Darfur" and First United Methodist Church of Redding, California present "An Evening with Omer Ismail," Tuesday, February 10, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the church's Social Hall.

The event is partially funded by a Peace With Justice Grant from the Board of Church and Society of the California-Nevada Annual Conference.

Ismail will be discussing the current situation in Darfur and efforts to bring a sustained peace to Sudan.

The genocide in Darfur enters its seventh year with more than 400,000 dead and at least three million people dependent on foreign aid for all or some of their food. Malnutrition is on the rise and in many of the camps there are inadequate supplies of food and potable water, while security is horrible. Unfortunately, as the crisis deepens, the catastrophe in Darfur commands less and less media attention.

Omer Ismail is a leading speaker for the people of Darfur. Born in El Fashir, Darfur, he has spent more than 20 years working both independently and with international organizations on relief efforts. After graduating from Khartoum University, he worked as a research assistant to the former Minister of Foreign Affairs in Sudan. After the National Islamic Front (NIF) took power in 1989, Ismail fled Sudan because of his political views. He has lived as a refugee in the United States since.

Omer Ismail is the co-founder of Darfur Peace and Development, which has worked to raise awareness about the crisis in his troubled region. He currently works as Policy Advisor to several agencies working in crisis management and conflict resolution in Africa, and is a Fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University's Carr Center for Human Rights Policy. He has worked closely with John Pendergrast and Don Cheadle, authors of "Not on Our Watch."
