Central United Methodist Church in Stockton, California, will host the Celtic music group Golden Bough for a matinee concert in the church sanctuary on Sunday, November 23. The Christmas in a Celtic Land program begins at 2 p.m. as a part of the church’s “Autumn at Central” festival.
No newcomer to the current Celtic trend, Golden Bough has been bringing its own brand of Celtic music—drawn from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man, French Brittany, and even Galicia (in Spain)— to family audiences far and wide since 1980. With lively instrumental pieces, haunting ballads, and humorous sing-alongs, the band creates an atmosphere that transports audiences to another place and time.
Its holiday concert is a rare blend of Old World Carols and other Celtic songs of Christmas and winter, coupled with the group’s own compositions, written especially for the Yuletide season.
Playing a variety of acoustic instruments, including Celtic harp, penny-whistle, guitar, accordion, violin, viola, mandolin, and bodhran (a hand-held drum particular to the Celtic culture) the trio of Margie Butler, Paul Espinza, and Kathy Sierra, captures the essence and joy of traditional music.
This trio of modern-day minstrels has performed the world over. Its two Yuletide CDs, Winter Dance and Christmas in a Celtic Land, are in worldwide distribution and have received enthusiastic response from music fans and critics alike. Rock & Reel magazine in England wrote of the group’s second Christmas offering, “A vibrant and multi-faceted collection, Christmas in a Celtic Land sees Golden Bough at their musical and creative peak.”
An Old World carol states, “Good fortune attend each merry man’s friend to do the best that he may, forgetting all wrongs in carol and song to drive the cold winter away.”
The joyful Celtic concert by Golden Bough at Stockton Central is a wonderful opportunity for the whole family to gather together to celebrate the upcoming Christmas holiday and drive the cold winter away. Don’t miss this unique Yuletide presentation: you’ll be hard put to sit still once the fire of Celtic music is flamed by these fine musicians!
Tickets are $15 for adults and are available at the Central UMC office at 3700 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, CA 95204, in advance and at the door. The church is located directly across the street from the University of the Pacific.
Children 12 and under may attend the concert free of charge.
