The 25-voice Mormon Temple Hill choir of Oakland will join ringers from seven Northern California local church bell choirs for the fifth annual United Methodist Handbell Concert at Lake Merritt United Methodist Church in Oakland, Saturday, November 8, at 5 p.m.
Director Dorothy Straks has selected five mass ring pieces in which vocal choirs join with bells for music intended for a variety of worship settings – contemporary, traditional, processional, Christmas, and benediction. The variety of pieces includes “For the Beauty of the Earth” and “Calypso Christmas” in keeping with the concert theme, “Bells and Voices.”
Bell choirs also have been invited to share their own individual pieces. Those who wish to join the Temple Hill choir as vocalists may contact the Golden Gate District office (email@example.com) about ordering the vocal scores, then join the rehearsal at 1:30 p.m. on the day of the concert.
Lake Merritt UMC is at 1330 Lakeshore Avenue in Oakland, overlooking Lake Merritt (parking is in the back at 1255 First Avenue). The concert is free to the public, although a free-will offering will be taken.
