The Director of United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) for the South Central Jurisdiction is asking UMs around the country to do all they can to assist with hurricane recovery.
“This hurricane season has taken a terrible toll in Texas and Louisiana,” Debbie Vest writes. “Early Responders are just now able to go into the Houston/Galveston area. The Louisiana Conference is welcoming teams for long-term clean-up. And hopefully it won’t be long before long term recovery teams can go into the Texas conference.”
Vest asks churches to consider a Sunday of special giving. (Information about that is available on the General Board of Global Missions website.)
Individuals may give to ADVANCE #3019695. The Advance is an accountable, designated-giving arm of The United Methodist Church that ensures that 100 percent of each gift reaches its intended mission or ministry. Contributions to ADVANCE #3019695 will be used for hurricane recovery in Texas, Haiti and other parts of the United States.
You may donate to ADVANCE #3019695 by visiting the UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) website and clicking on “Give Now” under the advance number, shown under “Current Emergencies” on the upper right side of the page.
You may also mail your check, made payable to the Louisiana Annual Conference, to 527 North Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA 70802; or to the Texas Annual Conference, 5215 Main Street, Houston, TX 77002. Be sure to put UMCOR ADVANCE # 3019695 in the memo line.
(All of the Ike Recovery contributions given to the Texas Annual Conference will stay in the Texas Annual Conference.)
The Texas conference also is in need of flood buckets (which help families get a start on the clean-up of their homes). Find out more at the UMCOR Relief Supplies page. The conference and UMCOR are still in the process of making damage assessments, but teams may volunteer for Texas long-term recovery on the conference website: www.txcumc.org/ikevolunteer. The UMVIM office there will respond to you as quickly as they can.
The Louisiana Conference is registering teams for clean-up from Katrina, Gustav, and Ike. Interested teams should contact the conference disaster response ministry at email@example.com or call (225) 346-5193 or (877) 345-5193.
