There are still openings in the “Angels on Call/Friendly Visitor” training, scheduled for Saturday, September 13 at First United Methodist Church in San Rafael, California.
The 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. training teaches ways to offer nurturing and caring for those no longer able to attend church, including visiting them – whether face to face, by telephone, or through a card ministry – and how to enjoy giving care to homebound folks, while helping them to feel better about themselves.
For whom is this training intended?
Lay members, pastoral care staff, ministers, social workers, caregivers, family with parents needing care – a wide variety of folk will benefit from the training. It is ideal for a church in which starting an older adult ministry is under consideration.
Why is there no charge to attend?
The training is funded through a grant from the General Board of Discipleship of the United Methodist Church. The goal is to help churches build an arm in the congregation to nurture and care for church family who are aging or becoming less able to get to church and serve in ways they are used to.
Will the training be offered at another time?
As interest presents itself, the training – which is taught by the Rev. Judith Pruess-Mellow, Executive Director of Senior New Ways – could be offered again in other locations, but not under the auspices of this grant. Pruess-Mellow is available to teach the program in a geographic area that draws many churches, in order to underwrite the costs and boost participation, and Senior New Ways has other programs for aging congregations, as well. For more information email email@example.com or call (650) 825-0559.
How do you get there?
The training will take place in the Fireside Room of FUMC San Rafael, 9 Ross Valley Drive, San Rafael, CA 94901, with wheelchair access and a parking lot across the street from the church.

The parking lot is accessed by driving one block farther on Ross Valley, turning left at the stop sign, and taking the first driveway on the left.
