Churches Asked to Observe Bread for the World Sunday in October

August 22, 2008

“Bread for the World – a Christian Voice for Ending Hunger,” asks congregations and other faith communities to renew their commitment to ending hunger in God’s world by taking part in Bread for the World Sunday on October 19 (or another Sunday of your choice in the fall).

June Kim, executive secretary of the World Hunger/Poverty and Sustainable Agriculture and Development programs of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), is on the Bread for the World Board of Directors, serving as the organization’s secretary.
An array of free resources is available to help churches observe Bread for the World Sunday – including worship bulletin inserts, offering envelopes, and bread bags (ideal for bake sales). A Reflection Resource includes a Scripture study of the parable of the prodigal son, along with a call to worship, litany, other prayers, and suggestions for hymns.

This year, Bread for the World Sunday takes place in the midst of the hunger crisis raging in our own country and around the world. For more information about this crisis and what you can do, please visit
