Individuals, churches, and community organizations are invited to join other United Methodists throughout the connection in an important campaign to end the genocide in Darfur – and to participate in a related study.
Jim Winkler, General Secretary of the General Board of Church and Society, says, “The tragic events in Darfur remind us of the crucial importance of amplifying our voices as people of faith, so that such crimes against humanity can be ended, once and for all.”
In cooperation with The ENOUGH Project, the website www.darfurchristianaction.org provides resources and materials about the campaign, and how you can mobilize your church, Sunday school, youth group, or campus ministry to participate.
This campaign to end the genocide in Darfur and beyond will include a petition churches are encouraged to spread throughout their communities that will be presented to President Bush and to the President-Elect in late November. The campaign will also provide weekly conference calls during September and October, beginning Wednesday, September 10 at 5 p.m. PDT. (details to be announced).
Christian Companion to Not On Our Watch
In addition, a member of the GBCS staff, Bill Mefford, has co-authored a Christian Companion to Not On Our Watch: The Mission to End Genocide in Darfur and Beyond, by John Prendergast and Don Cheadle. The Christian Companion is a powerful eight-week study that provides theological reflection; brief stories from Darfurians, peacekeepers, and activists; discussion questions; and specific steps groups can take together.
Winkler says, “As part of a larger interfaith campaign, we are asking as many churches as possible to participate in this study for September and October.”
