City officials and local church leaders have again asked the office of California-Nevada United Methodist Volunteers in Mission to help spread the word to United Methodist churches that volunteers will be needed for a second clean up day this coming Saturday, January 19th.  Volunteers are needed to help with registration tables and “mud out” operations.

More than 800 volunteers participated in a Community Clean Up Day organized by the City of Fernley and Fernley area churches last Saturday, January 12th. Volunteers from Nevada and other states removed mud and debris from the homes and yards following flooding a week earlier.

Ely UMC, First UMC-Reno, South Reno UMC, and Fallon UMC churches responded to requests for help by sending “mud-out” crews and offering hospitality to the disaster volunteers. Ely UMC sent its Early Response team (ERT) on a six hour drive (one way!) to participate in its first disaster response following last year’s training by United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) trainers. Officials from the city exclaimed their gratitude for all the volunteers and especially noted the Ely team’s dedication (i.e. long drive!) at a debriefing meeting following the day’s activities.

Volunteers for Saturday January 19 Community Clean Up should access the following link to the City of Fernley website for specifics on where to register and what supplies will be provided: http://www.cityoffernley.org. Crew leaders and supplies will be provided by the city. Look for “How to Volunteer” on the left side of the homepage. (Download City of Fernley flyer here.)

United Methodists needing overnight housing may contact the Volunteers in Mission office (916-374-1584; umvim@calnevumc.org) to register and to get accident insurance coverage while traveling and during their volunteer time in Fernley.
