This summer, Monte Toyon and the Web of Life Field (WOLF) School were certified “green” by the Monterey Bay Area Green Business Program.

Monte Toyon Camp is the first camp to be certified as a Green Business Partner in the Santa Cruz/Monterey area.

“The Monterey Bay Area Green Business Program is a successful partnership of environmental agencies, utilities and nonprofit organizations that assist, recognize and promote businesses and government agencies that volunteer to operate in a more environmentally responsible way. To be certified ‘green,’ participants must be in compliance with all regulations and meet program standards for conserving resources, preventing pollution and minimizing waste. We offer motivated businesses and agencies an easy-to-use framework for improving environmental performance.” (from

The certification included several inspections by various professionals who examined practices that were already in place – such as kitchen composting – and made some recommendations for change, such as blocking junk mail to reduce paper waste. The electric portion of the certification was done by RightLights, an arm of Ecology Action, a Santa Cruz non-profit.

The assessor from RightLights praised Site Director Mickey Petrov and the camp’s employees for their work, and Mickey’s initiative in having already changed over to more efficient, “green” energy by his own instigation. The certification, coordinated by WOLF School Associate Director Jenni McGuire, was an excellent demonstration of partnership between an outdoor education program and a facility it leases. This year, WOLF School’s environmental education students attending science camp at Monte Toyon will be able to learn about and attend the only certified “green” camp in the area.

Being a certified Green Business Partner, Camp Monte Toyon and WOLF School will be on the “Green List” that comes out in the local paper, and listed on the Green Business program website.
