Cal-Nevada Conference sanctions start of the Older Adult Ministry Council

August 04, 2007

Delegates to Annual Conference Session in June approved a resolution, put forth by an Older Adult Ministry task force after a year-long series of meetings, to create an Older Adult Ministry Council. With nearly half of the membership in United Methodist Churches being age 60 or older, there is a demonstrable need for such a group, and Councils are being started in other Conferences as well.

The mission of the OAMC, as outlined in the resolution, begins with the need to initiate and support ministries, plans, activities, and projects that are of particular interest to older adults. This summer the task force group will be expanded to include representatives from each of the Districts in forming the official Council. The Rev. John Oda of San Francisco’s Pine UMC is currently the Project Director of the task force and the OAMC.

The Older Adult Ministry Council will begin exchanging information with District churches and focus on resources and programs available. For a better understanding of individual church needs, a needs assessment survey will be disseminated. Information and plans will be described in an existing Conference website for Older Adult Ministry started by Rev. Judith Pruess-Mellow, Executive Director of Senior New Ways.
