UMCOR Sager Brown needs more flood buckets

August 07, 2007

AUG. 6, 2007— United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) Sager Brown Depot has nearly depleted its supply of flood buckets. The response effort to the recent Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma storm emergencies have severely taxed flood bucket stores. This low inventory is a serious concern, especially when the Atlantic hurricane season is still uncertain.

For Kathy Kraiza, Executive Director, the empty racks in the Baldwin, Louisiana Depot are a “good news, bad news” situation.

“The good news is that we have sent over 3,800 flood buckets to Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma—over half the stock in the warehouse,” she explained. “But that means we have fewer than 3,000 flood buckets in stock, and we’re only halfway through the 2007 hurricane season.”

Now, increasing the stock of flood buckets has become the most recent emergency at the Depot, as Midwest communities continue the clean-up process.

UMCOR needs your help to ensure that this kind of support continues to be readily available. UMCOR has responded to 28 domestic emergencies in 24 annual conferences since September 2006. The many emergencies over the past months have depleted response supplies.

How You Can Help
“We would like to rebuild our inventory quickly,” Kraiza continued. She invites congregations and individuals to send bucket contents or a contribution to fund supplies purchases. A list of flood bucket contents can be found in the Relief Supply section of, or you may give $45 towards the purchase of these items.

Sue King, Director of Volunteers in Mission for the California-Nevada Annual Conference, said, “This is an important, highly visible ministry of the United Methodist church that illustrates how many small gifts can have large impact in the time of a disaster. I know that any Cal-Nevada church who has sent UMVIM teams to the Gulf Coast Recovery efforts will respond generously to this appeal and to One Great Hour of Sharing, which funds UMCOR ministries each year.

“But,” she added, “Because of the cost of shipping from California-Nevada to Sager-Brown, Louisiana, I always encourage people to send donations rather than ship material goods to Sager Brown.”

Checks can be mailed to UMCOR, P.O. Box 9068, New York, NY 10087. Write Material Resources, Advance #901440,” on the memo line of your check. One hundred percent of every donation to any appeal, including appeals for flood buckets, goes to support the designated program.

In addition, “If churches prefer to give their gifts through the Cal-Nev Conference,” said King, “we do have a designated account for Flood Bucket Funds here in the Volunteers in Mission office. Donations are recorded in the treasurer's office and 100% of the funds are sent directly to Sager-Brown.”

The Cal-Nevada UMVIM office does NOT collect flood bucket items, however.
