Resources for Global AIDS Awareness Sundays

July 06, 2007

The General Board of Church & Society has a number of resources available for churches planning Global AIDS Awareness Sundays. Materials for special services can be found at the Board's website www.umc-gbcs.org.

A new resource, "Prayers for Encouragement," has been published by The Upper Room and is available in quantities. The 32-page booklet of meditations was developed for a specific need – offering hope for persons living with HIV and AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and other serious diseases. It would be an excellent addition to local church efforts to promote the UMC Global AIDS Fund. Each package of 20 booklets costs $10.00 plus shipping.

This special publication was made possible by gifts from the Center for the Church & Global AIDS, the UMC Global AIDS Fund, First UMC in Vandalia, IL, Mack & Marilyn MacAllister, and Friends of Upper Room Ministries.

The Global AIDS Fund was created at General Conference 2004, with a commitment to raise $1 per United Methodist for an $8 million fund to help alleviate suffering from AIDS at home at abroad. At ACS 2006, the California-Nevada Conference "signed on" to this commitment. The Conference Board of Church & Society is challenging our churches to raise $80,000 before next year's General Conference. Approximately $15,000 has been raised to date.

If you have questions or additional needs, contact Linda Bales at the General Board at lbales@umc-gbcs.org. She writes, "Thanks for all you're doing to increase awareness and mobilize resources to eradicate this horrific pandemic. May God's grace and peace surround you and light a path before you for the journey."

You hold my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel,
And afterward you will receive me with honor.
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And there is nothing on earth that I desire other than you.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
(Psalm 73:23-26)
