New hymn collection by Cal-Nev UM pastor

Hope Publishing Company is releasing a fourth collection of hymns by Rev. Dan Damon, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Richmond, California. The work, titled Fields of Mercy, is available from the publisher.


Rev. Damon is an internationally published writer of hymn texts and tunes. Hope Publishing Company released two previous collections of his hymns: Faith Will Sing (1993), and The Sound of Welcome (1998). Abingdon Press released his collection To the Thirsty World in 2002.


Rev. Damon’s hymns have been included in the New Century Hymnal; Chalice Hymnal; Voices United; The Faith We Sing and several others. He has released two recordings: “Sleepy Time Down South: Solo Piano” (2002), and “like a child: Songs and Hymns” (2005). He has also written hymn translations from Vietnamese, Portuguese, and Shona languages and, with Patrick Matsikenyiri, recently edited Njalo, a Collection of 16 Hymns in the African Tradition for Abingdon Press. He has presented his work at national conferences of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada and the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts.


In addition to his ministerial duties and songwriting, Rev. Damon serves as adjunct faculty in church music at the Graduate Theological Union, Center for the Arts, Religion, and Education in Berkeley and is a jazz pianist heard frequently in clubs in the San Francisco area.
