His ministry is music to their ears

April 11, 2007

A retired Cal-Nevada pastor has launched a project to put music back in the lives of middle school students in a New Orleans suburb devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Now serving as a chaplain at St. Mark's UMC in Sacramento, Sarge Wright is collecting new and used band instruments for the middle schools in Metairie, Louisiana, whose own instruments were destroyed by Katrina. The need is great: through conversations with school officials and Kiwanis Club members in Metairie, Chaplain Wright learned that neither the schools nor the parents of the students have the funds to replace the instruments. He wants to ensure that the children have music education and a band to brighten their spirits.

During April and early May, Chaplain Wright will be collecting instruments from churches and Kiwanis Clubs in the Sacramento area, with a goal of collecting 200 instruments. By Easter more than 50 had been donated. Chaplain Wright plans to personally present the instruments to school officials in Metairie in mid-May.

If you would like to be a part of this project take your new or used instruments (in working order) to church on Sunday or to the church office during the week. For more information contact Chaplain Wright at Sarge6220@comcast.net.

“The halls are alive with the sound of music”

If you have a passion for helping rebuild the music programs in New Orleans schools but live outside the Sacramento region, you’ll have an opportunity to donate instruments through your laity and clergy delegates to this year’s Annual Conference Session.

Delegates are being encouraged to involve their congregations in collecting musical instruments to refurbish for school bands and music programs in New Orleans – along with cell phones, eye glasses and hearing aids. (Cell phones do not need to be in working condition but all other items should be.)

The instruments, eye glasses, hearing aids and cell phones may be dropped in boxes to be located just inside the door of the Annual Conference Room (Halls A & B combined) at the Sacramento Convention Center during Annual Conference Session, June 19-24.
