Beautiful Earth, Sacred Earth: an Earth Day celebration

April 11, 2007

On April 22, Nevada City United Methodist Church will host “Beautiful Earth – Sacred Earth,” an Earth Day celebration organized by Earth Justice Ministries. The theme for Sunday morning worship will be “For the Beauty of the Earth,” with a 9 a.m. traditional service and a 10:30 a.m. contemporary service. Each service will feature a wide-screen, panoramic slide presentation lifting up the beauty and wonder of God’s creation. Prayers and litanies will focus on love of and care for the earth.

Afternoon events will feature a complementary soup luncheon, followed by the first of three big-screen, multimedia presentations in the church sanctuary. There will be a showing of a special John Muir feature, Yosemite: the Range of Light, along with presentations created by retired Cal-Nevada United Methodist pastor Don Baldwin. Rev. Baldwin’s dramatic and inspiring images of the Sierra-Nevada Mountains will fill three large panoramic screens, accompanied by beautiful music in stereo and inspirational narration. The showings will be at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m.

Rev. Baldwin served as the Resident Minister at Yosemite National Park and as pastor at Lake Tahoe. He has inspired audiences and churches with his programs on Yosemite and the High Sierras for more than 30 years.

Kilowatt Hours and Too Hot to Handle will be shown at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. These films address global climate change and what we can do about it. There also will be displays from local environmental groups, ideas for action, and refreshments.

These events are being offered free of charge, as they are being underwritten by Earth Justice Ministries (, an ecumenical organization dedicated to bringing the resources of faith to bear on the pressing peace, justice, and environmental issues of our day. The Conference Board of Church and Society has helped to make such events possible through its program of Ecumenical Agency Grants.
