Members of the First United Methodist Church of Redding, as a part of Genocide No More – Save Darfur of Redding, are deeply involved in planning a series of events to mark Global Days for Darfur.
A Save Darfur Family Day will be held at the church at noon on Sunday, April 22, in conjunction with Earth Day. There will be informational booths, intergenerational games, a free lunch, and a “No Talent, Talent Show.”
Cakes honoring the adoption of Camp Kounoungo, a refugee camp near the town of Gereda in Eastern Chad, will also be provided. On Friday, April 27 an Interfaith Prayer Vigil, led by Pastor Marty Murdock, will be held at 7:00 PM on the Sundial Bridge in the Turtle Bay Park area. On Saturday, April 28 a Darfur Film Festival will be held at 7:00 PM in the sanctuary of the church. "Sand and Sorrow" and "Judgment on Genocide" will be shown. There will also be readings by high school and college students and music by member Greg Lawson and other groups from the church. Finally, on Sunday, April 29 it is hoped that all churches in the Redding area will include prayers for Darfur and references to the genocide in their sermons. A chartered bus(es) will take many of the people to San Francisco for a rally and concert which begins at 4:00 PM at the Civic Center Plaza.
You are invited to go to Redding for any or all of these events, and urged to plan activities in your own area, highlighting the drastic situation in the Sudan. A good source of information is SaveDarfur.org – or you may contact Marv Steinberg at (530) 229-3661. TIME IS RUNNING OUT FOR DARFUR!
