Souper Bowl of Caring Update

March 07, 2007

California-Nevada UM teens helped put more than $7.6 million dollars into the Souper Bowl of Caring to help fight hunger and poverty.

The event organizers have heard from 1,994 Methodist churches across the U.S. and have totaled donations in the amount of $722,066. 3,363 Methodist churches registered, so not all UM churches have reported. To make sure your church is counted go to www.souperbowl.org and click on "report."

The annual event ties in with football’s Super Bowl to encourage churches, schools, and other groups to raise money for local charities. Close to 30 United Methodist churches from California-Nevada took part in the Souper Bowl of Caring this year, adding to more than 13,000 groups nationwide. The campaign surpassed last year’s total of approximately $5 million. It even made it onto the CBS pre-game show.

About 75% of the funds and food donations raised this year are going to food

banks and food pantries.

In 2006, 2,348 UM congregations contributed more than $1 million.
