Extrum-Fernandez Appointed to Bay View District

February 09, 2007

Bishop Beverly Shamana has announced the appointment of the Rev. Renae Extrum-Fernandez to District Superintendent of the Bay View District, effective July 1, 2007. The Rev. Extrum-Fernandez will succeed the Rev. James Lockwood-Stewart, who has served as a member of the conference since 1994 and as Bay View District Superintendent for the past six years.

The announcement made at her church, Walnut Creek First UMC, on Sunday, Feb. 4 was met with an ovation. “Walnut Creek has been such a wonderful learning congregation for me. I’ve learned so much about leadership and about myself. They have loved me into a real partnership of leadership.”

While admitting that leaving will be difficult, Renae Extrum-Fernandez calls the new appointment a tremendous honor. “There are some really wonderful people on the bishop’s cabinet and how they live out a real covenant together – to be part of that is a real humbling honor.”

In 1986, Extrum-Fernandez became the first Latina clergywoman raised in the California-Nevada Conference to receive ordination and full membership. She has given leadership on the conference and Jurisdictional level and has served as an elected delegate to General Conference three times.
