BMCR-Bay Area Chapter Encouraging Congregations to Support Proposition 47

October 29, 2014

In June, the California-Nevada Annual Conference passed a resolution from Black Methodists for Church Renewal (BMCR) Bay Area Chapter that invites local churches to (1) study the issue of mass incarceration, racial profiling and restorative justice, (2) initiate direct services to those formerly incarcerated, (3) call legislators to halt prison expansion (4) create programs for at risk youth and (5) observe Incarceration Awareness Sunday. In preparation for Election Day, next Tuesday, BMCR-Bay Area Chapter is encouraging local church leaders to educate their communities of faith about California’s broken and overwhelmingly overcrowded prison system.  The chapter says California’s Proposition 47 is an opportunity to begin to challenge the injustice reflected in our criminal justice system.
