Summer Camp Concludes

September 05, 2014

It’s hard to believe that another camp season is over and we are all back to school and whatever else the quickly approaching fall season might bring. I wanted to reflect on yet another amazing summer at Toyon Kid’s Camp, Camp Quest, Super Camp, Super Kid’s Camp, and our Leadership and IMPACT Training programs.   I am blessed to spend each of my summers with the hundreds of children, youth, young adults, and adults that gather each year to experience the wonders of the camp experience and make the memories and friendships that last a lifetime.
First and foremost, I wanted to acknowledge the outstanding staff we had at each camp. I so appreciated the dedication, true camp spirit, and endless amount of time, energy and effort given to provide a summer opportunity that is second to none. I especially want to thank our Directors: Kate Brunicardi, Jen Goto, Renee Eilerts, Lauren-Michelle Stevens, Sara Chisum, and Maryah Tucker for their leadership, planning, and facilitating role in each camp program. We truly could not have camp without them. All of our staff are volunteers, many take vacation time from work to be a part of their camp week; it goes to show what kind of an impact camp has on everyone.
This year our theme was “Get Real: Finding Your True Self in Jesus." Each day small groups spent time getting to know how we are created in the image of God by understanding Jesus as God, Friend, Teacher, Healer, Savior and the real thing. As well, camp was alive with all the activities that make camp…well…camp: arts and crafts, water activities, games, sports, ropes course, songs, campfire, and of course the talent show and s’mores made the week complete.
An additional activity was added this year. Each camp took time to provide a learning experience focusing on Imagine No Malaria, a conference wide effort to educate and raise awareness and money towards the $2 million annual conference goal to help stop this preventable, but deadly disease.
I would also like to thank:  Los Altos UMC, Martinez UMC, Brentwood UMC, Livingston UMC, Lincoln UMC, Atwater UMC, Lodi First UMC, Davis UMC, St. Paul’s Manteca UMC, Easter Hill UMC, Sacramento First UMC, Santa Rosa UMC, Reno First UMC, Wesley UMC Fresno, Chinese Community UMC Oakland, Sutter Creek UMC, San Jose UMC, Yerington UMC, Carson Valley UMC, Fair Oaks UMC, Bethany UMC San Francisco, Hayward First UMC, Holy Cross UMC Stockton, Campbell UMC, La Trinidad UMC San Jose, Twin Towers UMC, Willow Glen UMC, Asbury UMC, Good Sam UMC, San Jose First UMC, Los Gatos UMC, St Paul’s UMC San Jose,  Centennial UMC Sacramento, Contra Costa UMC, San Ramon Valley UMC, Church of The Joyful Healer, Pleasanton UMC, Lynwood UMC, San Leandro UMC, Davis UMC, and any church that I unintentionally overlooked for their faith in and support of this vital ministry for our young people of The California-Nevada Conference of The United Methodist Church.
See you next summer!
