Backpackpalooza is a summertime outreach ministry to families (living at or below the poverty level) in the surrounding community of Burlingame UMC. They partner with the Call Primrose Center, the King Center, Freedom House (offering support and shelter to human trafficking victims), Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse (CORA), and other non-profit organizations to register children that would benefit from the gift of a new back pack and supplies to begin the school year. They collect donations and raise funds to purchase backpacks and school supplies, so that all backpacks are of the same quality, style, and filled with the standard back- to-school supplies.
In addition, the church raises money throughout the year to create a festive party atmosphere which is the “Palooza.” It is their purpose to welcome children and their families, celebrate back to school, and offer a day of fun. On the day of the event there is live contemporary music with a positive message, hot dogs, popcorn, snow cones, face painting, and balloon art. The event is free for registered children and their families.
On August 2, with the support of 80 hardworking volunteers, the church celebrated their 9th Annual Backpackpalooza by giving away 430 backpacks. They have distributed backpacks to over 3,600 children in the past nine years.
